About Cricket

Cricket is a game played between two teams of eleven players each. It is played on a field of 65 to 75 yards. The main action is on the pitch in the center of the field. It is 22 yards long and 3-1/2 yards wide. On either side of the pitch there are three stumps and the batsman's goal is to defend them from the bowler. The batsman can score runs by hitting the ball and running between the two wickets. Also he could get 4 runs if the ball rolls or bounces to the boundary, or 6 runs if it goes over the boundary in the air.

The bowler's goal is to get the batsman out, by bowling to him. The bowler can run up to the wicket before delivering the ball. It can bounce before it reaches the batsman. Then the batsman hits the ball and runs! There are two umpires on the field at a time. They decide if the batsman is out. The bowler can get the batsman out by a number of ways.

  • Clean Bowled: When the ball hits the stumps and they fall
  • Caught: If the batsman hits the ball and a fielder catches it in the air
  • LBW: When the ball hits the batsman's leg right in front of the wicket.
  • Run out: The batsman can also be run out if the fielder throws the ball at the wicket and it falls and the batsman is short of the crease.
